How Do I Clean My Weighted Vest?
A weight vest is an investment that you want to last for years if not a lifetime. Most of the time, your weighted vest is drenched with sweat after usage. Your vest is designed to stand any rigorous movement that you do but it also needs some tender loving care once in a while.
So how do you clean your weight vest?
The maintenance of your weight vest will depend of the product itself and who manufactured it. Always check with the package label, if not with the manufacturer directly. This is to make sure what your vest is made of before you start cleaning it up. Some vest manufacturers suggests removing the weights before you wash it while others don’t.
Weight Vest Cleaning Advice #1 – Hand Wash
Some manufacturers specifically note in their package that the vest is not machine washable like MIR Weight Vests. The company recommendation of cleaning is to sprinkle the vest with water and wipe with a soft towel. It also reminds users not to wash the iron weights.
V-Force also recommends their weight vest not to be washed in a washing machine. Why? V-Force explains that this is because they use a lot of velcro type fasteners and 1000D Cordura nylon in their vests.
The scratchy part of Velcro hooks stick to everything. A lot of lint will attach to Velcro when you wash it in the washer. This will decrease the holding strength of Velcro. Another reason is because of the 1000D Cordura nylon. It was used to make water-resistant material to prevent moisture from penetrating into the vest’s foam padding.
V-Force recommends cleaning your vest by hand washing only. Simple laid it on a flat surface inside up, without removing the weights. You can use wipes or any antibacterial cloth wipe. Wipe it down for about 30 seconds. You may also use mild detergent and water in a cloth or sponge to hand wash over it.
Weight Vest Cleaning Advice #2 – Machine Wash
Weight vests such as Hyperwear Vest Pro and Sxy are machine washable. If you do machine wash the vest, remove the weights. Wash it in delicate cycle, tumble dry on low heat, and hang to dry. Once its dry, you can slip the weights back in and you are ready to go again.
Weight Vest Cleaning Advice #3 – Frequency of Cleaning
It is recommended to wash your vest once every other week if you use it more frequently.
Weight Vest Cleaning Advice #4 – Antimicrobial Sprays
You can keep your vest smelling fresh and odor free by spraying it with an antimicrobial solution after use. This product is for athletic shoes but has the same effect on athletic gear and clothing. Check out 10 Seconds Deodorant and Disinfectant. I found it to work great for my daily weigh vest cleaning procedure.
You can buy one or you may also want to consider creating your own antibacterial spray. Just pour 1 cup of water into a spray bottle. Add 20 drops of lavender essential oil and shake to blend. Spray on the weight vest inside surface after your workout. Leave on for 15 minutes, rinse with warm water in a sponge or cloth, and let it air dry.
Another great way of cleaning your weighted vest is to use Citrus II Cpap Mask Wipes. Just wipe off any sweat and odor after usage of your vest. It has a very light scent and deodorizes and cleans your vest safely and gently.
Weight Vest Cleaning Advice #5 – Sweat-Stopper Liner
You may want to invest extra in a Sweat-Stopper Liner. It is machine wash/dry liner that you can use under your vest to prevent bad odor. It is moisture wicking, anti-microbial, and has sweat-stopping covering to prevent sweat from getting to your vest. You can simply rip it out after workout, wash and then dry. This will keep you vest fresh all the time. Some vests come with a Sweat-Stopper Liner like the 30 Lb V-Max Weight Vest – Made in USA.
In general, you can hand wash your vest using a mild soap or detergent. Rinse it well with wet cloth or sponge. Use antimicrobial solution to disinfect and deodorize in between. Wring excess water out using a towel and then hang it to dry.
